52 Week Project: Week 10

This week’s subject was “Looking Up”.  Had a few different ideas for this assignment but felt a pull to this grove of trees I noticed last week while walking with my trusty companion, Spike.

52 Week Project: Week 9

The subject for this week was “Abstract”.  Admittedly, I didn’t spend a lot of time on my task this week for a number of reasons…I mean excuses.  It’s not great but here it is.  9 down, 43 to go.

Scars on 45

Wow!  Where do I start with this one?  This March marks the 1 year anniversary of the journey of owning my photography business and I think it’s been a damn good year.  Looking back, it’s been full of incredible achievements, wonderful surprises and great photo ops.  But for me, the pinnacle of the year took place this past Friday when I had the distinct pleasure of photographing Scars on 45.  If you haven’t heard of Scars on 45, give it some time as before long they will be a household name right up there with the likes of Coldplay & U2…yes, U2.

To make a long story short, I will just say that I met up with the band and had the time of my life but also experienced the crowning achievement of my career as a photographer to date.  I can’t play an instrument to save my life but music has always been a passion of mine and it only makes sense (to me) that I try and combine my passion of photography with my passion of music.

So here are a few shots from my evening with Scars on 45.  A huge heartfelt “Thank You” to the band; Danny, Aimee, Stu, Nova, Chris and Matt.  Also a big thanks to Steve Nice (manager) and Todd Clifford (tour manager) for their help and support.

52 Week Project: Week 8

Week 8:  Laughter.  This was an easy week for me as I already had a photograph in my archive I knew I’d use for this week’s assignment.   So without further ado…

52 Week Project: Week 7

This weeks subject was “light”.  I looked through the thesaurus trying to find different definitions of the word “light” so that I could shoot something unique and different.  There are over 1000 other participants in this 52 Week Project and my goal each week is to think of a way to capture the subject a little differently from the rest.  I suppose if I wasn’t training for half marathons, the upcoming soccer season and working a regular 40 hour work week I would have had more to time to compose something  unique.  This is far from being my best work and I doubt this ranks up there with “decent”.  Actually, I think the shot sucks but I got it done and in the process, I tried new and different things which is the point of this project, so in that aspect, this isn’t a total failure.

Out of my shots for the week, I ended up with 3 keepers.  I thought all 3 were subpar but decided to share them here anyway.

52 Week Project: Weeks 5 & 6

Week 5 of my 52 Week Project was entitled “My Favorite Place” and after giving it a ton of thought, I realized that my favorite place is indeed my current hometown of Boise, Idaho.  The photo I chose for this week of the project is one you’ve seen before but couldn’t help sharing again with the projects other participants.

Week 6 of the project was a “Song or Movie Title”.  Where was I going to go with this one?  My iPod contains over 80GB of music ranging from artists such as Adam and the Ants all the way across the board to Vivaldi and Beethoven but as my week progressed my thoughts kept returning to my favorite rock band of all time, The Police.  And while driving around town last Thursday when Message in a Bottle hit the playlist, I knew what my choice was going to be.

Odds & Sods

As a photographer shoots throughout a session he or she accumulates a series of photos that are decent but not quite good enough (for whatever reason) to post in a gallery.  This is where the blog section of their website comes in handy.  It’s like the Island of Misfit Toys.  here is a series of shots I’ve taken over the last few months that weren’t gallery worthy but may have found their way on my Facebook page (which you can link to if you hit the Facebook logo on this page).

More to come as I go through my collection of Misfit Toys.

52 Week Project: Week 4

This week’s assignment was a self-portrait.  The list of ideas for a shot accumulated throughout the week but the old windows in my garage kept drawing me in.

52 Week Project: Week 3

Week 3 and I thought this was another self-portrait week and had a good idea of what I wanted to shoot until I looked at the schedule and realized that that was for Week 4.  The assignment for Week 3 was “My Favorite Thing”.  Being the king of procrastination that I am I waited until the last minute to shoot so I had to pull this shot from the archives.

Some of my favorite things include; football (soccer to you Yanks), music, mountain biking, cigars and a good glass of scotch…not necessarily in that order.  But for me, the one thing that trumps all of those is the beauty of the human body.  So with that, I present to you my shot for Week 3.

52 Week Project: Week 2

This weeks subject was my front door.  Seems simple enough but how does one shoot a photo of their front door in a way that’s new and unique.  One of the benefits of this 52 Week Project is that it makes the photographer think about the subject prior to snapping off photos.
